Types of Massage Available

  • Swedish: In all Swedish massage, the therapist lubricates the skin with massage oil and performs various strokes that warm up and work the muscle tissue, releasing tension and breaking up muscle “knots” or adhered tissues, called adhesions. Swedish massage promotes relaxation and eases muscle tension.
  • Amma: Rooted in ancient medicinal techniques, the massage therapist uses a range of techniques and massage strokes to perform deep tissue manipulation and to stimulate flow of energy in the client. Therapists rely heavily on the pressure points of the body, manipulating specific points or regions to treat particular issues. At the end of the session, the client will feel more relaxed and balanced.
  • Pre-natal: A trained pre-natal massage therapist knows where a pregnant woman’s sore spots are likely to be and may be able to provide some relief. (She’ll also know which areas and techniques to avoid) Still, it’s important to communicate with her and tell her where you need attention. Let her know right away if anything during the massage – including your positioning – is causing you any discomfort.
  • Deep Tissue: While many massages are designed to provide pleasure and relaxation to the client, there are some massages that focus on providing superior health benefits. The deep tissue massage is one of these, and its benefits are known to greatly improve the condition of many different body parts. A true deep tissue massage occurs when a massage therapist applies firm pressure to the client’s muscles using her hands, fingertips, knuckles, elbows and even forearms, stimulating muscles and body tissues beyond the exterior level.
  • Medical Massage: Medical massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a chiropractor. The therapist may use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the medial massage treatment only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis.
  • Trigger Point Therapy: A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot that is painful. It is called a trigger point because it “triggers” a painful response. It affects not only the muscle where the trigger point is located, but also causes “referred pain” in tissues supplied by nerves. Trigger points are located in a taut band of muscle fibers. The trigger point is the most-tender point in the band. The therapist will locate and deactivate them using finger pressure. One technique is to pick up the muscle fibers in a pincer grip.
  • Detoxification (weight loss) Massage: This is a form of massage that stimulates the lymphatic system with gentle massaging strokes. The light rhythmical massage encourages the lymphatic system to eliminate metabolic waste products, excess fluid and bacteria. This form of massage is best if practiced in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise.

Throughout the years, massage therapy has been known to benefit many health aspects, including relief from joint and muscle pain, increased blood circulation as well as stress and depression reduction.

Massage Therapy has also been known to detoxify the body and remove waste and toxins from the body. The overall result sought after in massage therapy is the ability to bring the body to its natural state with increased healing capabilities.

Massage is covered under Empire NYSHIP insurance and some BlueCross BlueShield and Aetna plans. If you have insurance through another provider, we’re happy to check your benefits for you—though in our experience, there is typically a cash fee.
